On 4 September 2010 Sebastian Boenisch celebrated his debut with the Polish national team against Ukraine. Two weeks later the 23-year-old suffered a major setback as cartilage damage in his knee will force him to miss at least four months. WERDER.DE caught up with the fullback by telephone Monday afternoon and talked about the healing process, the Green-Whites’ current sporting situation and the up-coming internationals.
Sebastian, the most important question first. How are things going two weeks after the arthroscopic surgery?
By now everything is okay again. I don’t have any pain and am looking forward to beginning the rehabilitation.
If you haven’t been able to do any rehab yet, that means you have had to just wait for the healing process. Or how should one imagine your situation?
I cannot put weight on the knee for the first six weeks but of course I am doing some things. I am at the stadium twice every day for treatment. Among other things, I am receiving lymph drainage and working on rebuilding the muscles so that the muscular system does not regress. Rehab starts after the sixth week.
And how satisfied are you with the healing process?
Until now everything has gone satisfactorily. I am talking daily with physiotherapists and they say that the knee is in good condition. Besides, I don’t have any pain and that means a lot.
Looking ahead to the national team matches, the Polish national team will be playing two games. How aggravating is it that you cannot play after having just had your debut?
It is a pity. The first two games went very well for me and there are two good games set up against the U.S. in Chicago and against Ecuador in Montreal. But for me I first have to do everything I can to get fit as quickly as possible.
