Four days after the disappointing 4-0 loss at Inter Milan in the Champions League, Werder Bremen showed an excellent response in their 2-2 draw at Bayer Leverkusen. But those in Green-Whites camp were not entirely satisfied.
"When you are leading in the second half then you also would like that as a final result," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. "In the first half we had our struggles. With Leverkusen controlling the game we allowed quite a bit. But the team showed a good response in the second half. We got into the game better and had some good scenes especially on offence."
"The three points would have done us good today and if you look at the course of the game then of course we are not entirely satisfied with the result," said manager Klaus Allofs, who knows a victory would have been possible for the Green-Whites. "But in our current state the result is in order." Allofs also saw a clear improvement after the break. "We did things a lot better. The first half was not that good. But after the break we were much more organised, stood more compact, won more balls and limited the Leverkusen passing game," said Allofs. An important reason why things went smoother in the second half Sunday evening at BayArena was Hugo Almeida, who was substituted in at the break and scored the equaliser for 1-1.
Altogether Per Mertesacker also saw a clear improvement in performance compared to the game during the week. "We had some points which we needed to improve. Points wise we improved by one. We did not allow too much defensively, stood stable and passed better in the second half. We were able to switch tempo more with the ball. The point was a start, a small step forward. Still it should not be enough. We want more," said Mertesacker.
