The past Bundesliga task had been overcome in splendid form and was followed by a trip to a reigning European cup champion. Up until this point the recent history of both Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen – who match up on Sunday 3 October 2010 at 5:30 p.m. in the BayArena – had been identical. But the results on the international stage could not be any different as Leverkusen played to a 1-1 draw in the Europa League at Atletico Madrid while Bremen lost 4-0 at Inter Milan in the Champions League.
“We will remain matter of fact, clearly talk about the facts and give the necessary details to do things better. The entire team failed to show in Milan what it necessary in the Champions League. We all have to take blame for that,” said Werder coach Thomas Schaaf at the press conference before the difficult away match against Bayer Leverkusen.
And after the nightmare in Milan, the advance schedule offers up the next difficult test in Bayer Leverkusen. The teams are four points apart on the Bundesliga table and that gives Schaaf reason to be happy. “We should be happy that we have a chance to prove ourselves again so quickly against a top opponent. And especially after a game like the one against Inter, everyone needs to have fun and the desire to do things better,” said the Bremen coach.
Bremen do not have to look back too far to find the level they would like to return to. Werder bosses agree they would like to continue where they stopped against Hamburg and once again show a good reaction. But Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes will have his team prepared. “I do not gauge Werder by their 4-0 loss in Milan but by their home victory against Hamburg. The team can react to negative results. They are very dangerous because they have excellent players, a good structure, a top organisation during the game and run a lot,” said Heynckes.
