Werder Bremen will be playing on Sunday 3 October 2010 at 5:30 p.m. in the BayArena. Ahead of the match-up against Bayer Leverkusen, WERDER.DE spoke with Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes. Despite the numerous injuries for Werder, the 65-year-old Heynckes is expecting a strong Bremen team. Read for yourself!
Mr. Heynckes, you are still waiting for your first victory against Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf. Until now you have three draws and three losses. What makes the games against Werder so difficult?
You are well informed. I didn’t even know that. But I also coached eight years abroad and didn’t have much of a chance to win against Werder. But it’s always an incentive to play against Bremen. Werder are always a challenge. They always have a fine-tuned team and are well structured. They really run a lot and pass well. Even in last season’s 0-0 in the BayArena Werder played a classy match.
How would you describe Werder Bremen’s development in the last few years?
Werder have been the biggest challenger to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga over the last few years. It is admirable what Bremen have done. Recently they have played quite differently, which has to do with their missing players. When top players like Torsten Frings and Claudio Pizarro are injured, it is always difficult to compensate for that. We had a similar problem ourselves.
Certainly you watched Werder’s 4-0 loss against Inter Milan on Wednesday. So you know already how you want to beat Bremen on Sunday…
I did not see the match in Milan live. I was already in Madrid. I still have a lot of friends from my time in Spain who I visited before our Europa League game against Atletico Madrid. It is difficult to compensate for those losses when you have a game every three days. But I am certain that it will be an entirely different game on Sunday.
