Werder Bremen’s personnel situation ahead of their match at Leverkusen remains quite problematic. Head coach Thomas Schaaf announced Friday that long-time injured Naldo (knee problems), Sebastian Boenisch (knee surgery) and Christian Vander (pubic bone inflammation) as well as Claudio Pizarro, Clemens Fritz (both tear ligaments), Torsten Frings (bruised hip), Sandro Wagner (knee) and Dominik Schmidt (knee problems) are all unavailable on Sunday in Leverkusen. And Schaaf added that there is a "big question mark" if Tim Borowski can play. The 30-year-old Borowski had to be subbed out of the Champions League match at Inter Milan at half-time with a groin problem and has been receiving treatment the last couple days. "We still have some hope. It has gotten a little better but not good enough yet," said Schaaf, who is not expecting to have a very large roster in Leverkusen.
There was positive news about Petri Pasanen. After playing 45 minutes during the week in Milan, there was "no negative reaction" for the Finnish international, meaning the defender should be available again on Sunday. Schaaf refused to say if he would fill out his roster with players from Werder’s U23 side. "Certainly we are thinking about nominating more players. But we may just head to Leverkusen with fewer players," said the coach.
One thing that will not be missing for Bremen in Leverkusen is loud fan support as some 3,500 Green-White supporters are expected Sunday evening at BayArena.
