At the end of the Champions League group match between Inter Milan and Werder Bremen there was a 4-0 loss shining from the scoreboard of Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. It was a clear loss against a superb opponent. "We played against the best team in the world today," said Marko Arnautovic, who last season was under contract with Inter. "Today you could see the clear difference between these teams. But still we cannot forget who we were playing against and who we had to replace," said Per Mertesacker, who on Wednesday celebrated his 26th birthday.
"We had to make up for the missing quality with team unity and good challenging demeanour. Unfortunately we didn’t do that today," added Mertesacker. "We know that we always have to play to the limit to beat these kinds of teams. Today we really didn’t go into the challenges and certainly were not a worthy opponent for Inter," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. "We want to gauge ourselves in this competition with the really big teams. But sometimes something is just missing to make these games more balanced."
Manager Klaus Allofs praised the opponents’ performance. "I don’t really see it that negatively. You could see today how concentrated, determined and professional players such as Eto’o, Schneijder, Maicon and Cambiasso went into the game. Today we could have used our experienced players," said Allofs regarding to the injuries to Torsten Frings, Clemens Fritz, Claudio Pizarro and Naldo. "At this level, it’s difficult to compensate when you don’t have those players." The manager added: "We could have kept playing a long time today and nothing positive would have come out of it for us."
