Werder Bremen suffered a convincing 4-0 loss in their away match at title-holders Inter Milan in Group A of the UEFA Champions League. Samuel Eto’o scored three goals for the Italians with Wesley Sneijder adding one of his own.
Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf was without a number of players after the North Derby win over Hamburg with Clemens Fritz, Torsten Frings and Claudio Pizarro all out injured and Aaron Hunt being sent to the bench in favour of Philipp Bragfrede, Daniel Jensen, Tim Borowski and Marko Arnautovic. In addition, Wesley moved from defensive midfield to fullback at Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. Bremen had the better start but Lucio cleared Hugo Almeida’s looping shot at the line in the third minute and Inter keeper Julio Cesar saved an Almeida free kick blast a minute later.
Inter slowly gained control of the match with one chance after another and took the lead after 21 minutes with Samuel Eto’o slotting home between the legs of the out-rushing keeper Tim Wiese after a long run from the Cameroonian. And Eto’o doubled the advantage in the 27th minute, collecting Lucio’s long ball forward, getting past Sebastian Prödl and beating Wiese. And the lead was 3-0 in the 34th minute with another effective push forward with Eto’o passing over to Wesley Sneijder, who looped it over Wiese. And Inter were ahead 3-0 at the break.
Thomas Schaaf reacted at the break and brought in Petri Pasanen for Tim Borowski. Werder came out motivated in the second half and had a chance in the 51st minute but reserve keeper Luca Castellazzi fended Wesley’s attempt to corner. Inter did only the absolute necessary the rest of the way and scored yet again in the 81st minute. Philipp Bargfrede lost the ball and the title holders were ice cold in using the chance with a combination between Sneijder and Eto’o, who tallied a third time to compete his hat-trick and a 4-0 Inter victory.
