Great atmosphere, numerous chances, five goals and in the end a 3-2 victory for Werder: the 93rd North Derby included everything it promised ahead of time. "After the game we stood around on the pitch and realised that there are no normal games between Werder and Hamburg," said manager Klaus Allofs. "They are always really great experiences for the fans and for us, even though we wish it would be a bit easier on the nerves some times. But it’s always okay if we leave the pitch a winner. Both teams really played offensively and it was a real battle."
Head coach Thomas Schaaf agreed with the Werder manager. "Both teams played their part in a very good derby. It was exciting, it was really good, it was a North Derby that was fun. Mainly we are happy that we won the game," said Schaaf. Especially noticeable was the Green-Whites’ improvement over the last two games against Mainz and Hannover. "That was much better than recently. We went into the game more active, got ourselves into position better and looked to take shots. We can build upon this performance," said Schaaf.
In addition to the absolute will to win, one man played a decisive role in the Green-Whites’ win as Hugo Almeida scored two goals and was named by journalists as Man of the Match. "It is a good feeling to win a North Derby. With this victory we snapped our losing streak," said the match winner. "For me the goals were not important today but that I could help the team with them."
