Werder Bremen snapped a two-game losing streak in the Bundesliga with a 3-2 victory in the 93rd North Derby at home against Hamburg. Hugo Almeida scored two goals and Marko Marin added one for Thomas Schaaf’s team. Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jonathan Pitroipa tallied for Hamburg.

In front of 36,300 spectators at Weser Stadium, Werder coach Thomas Schaaf made three changes from their loss against Hannover with long-time injured Per Mertesacker (wearing a protective facial mask) and Claudio Pizarro entering the starting line-up as well as Hugo Almeida. They replaced the injured Petri Pasanen, Philipp Bargfrede and Sandro Wagner as Bremen looked to improve on their worst start in Schaaf’s career at Bremen since 1999. Hamburg had more ball possession in the early going though the Green-Whites’ offside trap was effective. Werder were lucky at the 21-minute mark that Ruud van Nistelrooy did not cleaning strike a cross from the left side. Bremen went ahead in the 25th minute on a strong push forward with Claudio Pizarro passing out to Marko Marin’s whose ball back into the middle went off Guy Demel and past Hamburg keeper Frank Rost to make it 1-0. Werder were calling for a penalty in the 28th minute on an attack against Marin in the area. But Hugo Almeida took care of business in the 29th minute, heading home Aaron Hunt’s free kick for a 2-0 lead. Schaaf took out Clemens Fritz in the 43rd minute in favour of Philipp Bargfrede and the Werder lead was 2-0 at the break.

Neither side could gain control early in the second half through Green-Whites keeper Tim Wiese was forced to make a fine save on Marcell Jansen’s blast in the 47th minute. Hamburg pulled a goal back in the 59th minute on a counter attack over the right side through Jonathan Pitroipa, whose cross was back-heeled by van Nistelrooy to cut the lead to 2-1 for Bremen. And Pitroipa – a substitute in the 53rd minute – equalised the game with a blast from the right side in the 63rd minute. Per Mertesacker saved a Hamburg goal with 15 minutes to play, getting in front of Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting’s blast from five yards. With nine minutes left, Schaaf took out Aaron Hunt for Daniel Jensen. The Green-Whites regained the lead in the 85th minute with Almeida striking a second time on the night, slotting home Wesley’s superb cross to make it 3-2. Hamburg would not go down without a fight with van Nistelrooy shooting just wide from five yards in the 88th minute. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak and gives the Green-Whites seven points for 11th place.
