The goal was to forget the disappointing 2-0 home loss against Mainz on Saturday. But three days later Werder Bremen lost again, falling 4-1 (1-1) at Hannover. "That was naturally not what we had imagined. We had hoped that we could play better than Saturday," said a disappointed Thomas Schaaf at the post-match press conference. "In the first half we had some good moments and also some good actions in front of the opposing goal. But in the second half we went for the wrong means," added the coach. "We wanted to play quicker into the attack than necessary instead of just letting the ball be played securely through our own ranks. And that led us to quickly losing the ball and making it easier for our opponents. Hannover really took advantage of that very well," said an aggravated Schaaf after the game.
"We wanted to have the right reaction to the game against Mainz. But we absolutely could not show that. And the result could not have been any clearer," said manager Klaus Allofs. "We were not able to forget about the game from Saturday. A number of players are totally out of sync." The manager was especially missing the absolute will to fight for a victory. "In these kinds of games you can only win with readiness to run and fight and everyone helps each other. This readiness is not really there at the moment for us," said Allofs. Captain Torsten Frings underlined that the Green-Whites can only have success as a unit. "One has to work for the other. And that isn’t working as it usually does. But it has to get better really quickly," said Frings. "We were just standing around and not really getting into the game," added right back Clemens Fritz.
