Werder Bremen suffered another disappointing loss in the fifth game day of the Bundesliga, losing 4-1 at Hannover. Torsten Frings scored for Thomas Schaaf’s team. But Hannover received an own goal by Green-White defender Clemens Fritz as well as Didier Ya Konan, Christian Schulz and Mohammed Abdellaoue.
Thomas Schaaf made three changes to his starting line-up after the disappointing loss at home against Mainz. Tim Borowski, Marko Arnautovic and Hugo Almeida headed to the bench in favour of Wesley, Philipp Bargfrede and Sandro Wagner – the latter making his Bundesliga starting debut. Bremen struggled at the beginning and fell behind 1-0 after just 11 minutes on an own goal by Clemens Fritz, who deflected a header pass past Tim Wiese with his thigh. The Green-Whites came back into the game a bit better and equalised in the 36th minute. After Sebastian Prödl was taken down in the area, captain Torsten Frings converted into the lower left corner for his 19th consecutive penalty since 2004 to make it 1-1. And that was the score at the break.
Werder struggled to gain any control of the contest shortly after the re-start and watched Hannover take the lead again in the 53rd minute.
Philipp Bargfrede’s lost ball in the midfield was turned into a quick attack by the hosts with Didier Ya Konan beating Tim Wiese for a 2-1 lead. Bremen were unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty in the 64th minute as Moritz Stoppelkamp handled the ball in the area. Christian Schulz pushed Hannover’s lead to 3-1 in the 79th minute and Mohammed Abdellaoue finished off the scoring two minutes into injury time. The loss leaves the Green-Whites with just four points from five matches in 12th place.
