The disappointment over their own performance was still in the air for the Green-Whites a day after losing 2-0 at home to Mainz. At least there was some good news personnel-wise at Werder training on Sunday. Per Mertesacker and Claudio Pizarro were not training with the team but both were back on the pitch and worked out close to their teammates with fitness coach Yann-Benjamin Kugel. But an appearance on Tuesday, 21 September 2010 against Hannover would be too early for both players.
"I was out of training for 10 days and you can feel that. Now I have to wait and see if there is any reaction to the strain and strictly follow what the doctors say," said Mertesacker, who trained for the first time with a specially fitted facial mask. "Of course it bothers you, otherwise everyone would play with a mask," joked the German international. "But I can train without any problems with the Green-Whites and we will do some things to fit in and then really work hard on running. But an appearance on Tuesday is not really feasible," added Mertesacker, who suffered a broken eye socket in the German national team match against Azerbaijan.
Claudio Pizarro also assumes he will not yet be available to play against Hannover. The Peruvian has only been back in training for three days since his muscle strain, "and that’s not enough." After kicking a ball for the first time since his injury, Pizarro believes he could make his comeback on Saturday, 25 September 2010 in the North Derby against Hamburg.
