Uninspired, unconcentrated, inexact – four days after a great fight back against Tottenham Hotspur, Werder Bremen came up with a poor performance in losing 2-0 against Mainz for their first home defeat at Weser Stadium since falling to Bayern Munich 3-2 some eight months ago. "That was our worst game that I have seen in a long, long time," said manager Klaus Allofs after the game about the Green-Whites’ showing. "I could not have expected that we can even play so poorly. That was not our real face today."
Head coach Thomas Schaaf agreed with the manager. "I cannot remember another date when we played as badly as we did today. What we offered today was not for one second what I know of my team," said the coach. "We didn’t pressure the opponent, did not go into the challenges. If we don’t do that then we cannot take advantage of our quality."
Also very disappointed was Torsten Frings. "That was possibly the worst game for us since I have been at Werder. We wanted to go for it and not let Mainz into the game. But especially here at home, where we usually control the game, we were running too much after the ball. That was way too little for our standards. I am speechless," said Werder’s captain.
