Werder Bremen suffered a setback in the Bundesliga in losing 2-0 against Mainz in the fourth game day of the Bundesliga. Marcel Risse and Andre Schuerrle scored the goals for Mainz, who are new leaders in the Bundesliga.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf made two changes from his Champions League line-up against Tottenham with Aaron Hunt and Tim Borowski replacing Philipp Bargfrede and Wesley. Mainz had the better run of play in the early going before the Green-Whites began to earn more possession. Werder however were lucky a penalty was not given in the 29th in a challenge between Petri Pasanen and Lewis Holtby. The rest of the first half lacked any real highlights or organised attacks and the score was 0-0 at the break.
Mainz were the stronger team out of the changing room with Marcel Risse missing a chance in the 49th, but Risse then beat keeper Tim Wiese in the 53rd from a tight angle for a 1-0 lead. And Andre Schuerrle doubled the lead in the 61st minute after a pass from Risse. Hugo Almeida scored in the 69th minute but was ruled offside and then Sandro Wagner struck the crossbar with a header in the 78th. In the end, Werder Bremen cannot be satisfied with the loss as Mainz were the better side in the match. The Green-Whites are 10th in the standings with four points.
