Werder Bremen completed their final training ahead of the game against Mainz as expected without Claudio Pizarro, Per Mertesacker and Naldo. But also missing from Werder’s Friday afternoon training was Sebastian Boenisch, who was out due to knee problems and will not be on the team squad for the game Saturday.
"His knee has not calmed down and it’s hindering him a bit. He will be looked at on Monday," said Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf after the training about the status of his defender. There was however good news about Naldo. In an interview with WERDER.TV, the Brazilian said: "I hope that I can train with fitness coach Yann-Benjamin Kugel next week."
Another injured defender was able to complete running training on Friday as Per Mertesacker made another step to improvement from his broken eye socket. "Things are looking good really quick. I definitely plan on being back on the pitch soon," said Werder’s German international Mertesacker.
The coaching staff nominated the follow 17 players for the game against Mainz: Wiese, Mielitz - Pasanen, Fritz, Silvestre, Prödl, Bargfrede, Borowski, Hunt, Husejinovic, Marin, Frings, Jensen, Wesley, Arnautovic, Wagner, Almeida
