One day after the opening match of the Champions League group stage against Tottenham Hotspur, Werder Bremen began training and preparations Wednesday morning for the up-coming Bundesliga match against Mainz.
Not taking part in training however were Marko Arnautovic, Hugo Almeida as well as the injured trio of Claudio Pizarro, Per Mertesacker and Naldo. While Arnautovic was out due to a routine EKG, Almeida was also out due to injury. "Hugo has some problems with his neck muscles," explained head coach Thomas Schaaf after the training session. "He is currently being hindered by it but I think that he should be ready again by Saturday."
Claudio Pizaro, on the other hand, is expected out for the Green-Whites on Saturday against the surprise side from Mainz. "There is nothing new about him. He will have another examination today and maybe he can take the first steps to returning to team training tomorrow," said Schaaf.
Things are looking better meanwhile for Per Mertesacker. "I am being examined every day and the recovery is going well. If everything goes well then I can run for the first time again on Friday," said the defensive ace. And the German international will be completing his laps around the training grounds without a facemask. "It will be ready tomorrow but it is there to protect me from hits. Therefore I don’t need it for running," said Mertesacker.
