Head coach Thomas Schaaf promised Werder fans entertaining Champions League football evenings at the official press conference Monday night. And 30,344 spectators made their way to Weser Stadium Tuesday to experience a thrilling match against Tottenham. After just 18 minutes the Green-Whites were already trailing 2-0, but in the end Werder fought to a 2-2 draw. "I cannot yet decide if I am more happy about the comeback or if I should be aggravated about the first half," said the Bremen coach afterwards.
"I definitely keep asking myself how such a first half can happen after such a great game in Munich where we played so concentrated and organised," said Schaaf. The players also didn’t have an answer for their performance in the first half hour. "Both teams played for a victory from the very start and Tottenham did a better job at the start. We gave them a lot of space and they took advantage of that," said Wesley after his first match in the Champions League. "I have always said that we have to have a top performance in every game to survive in the Champions League," added captain Torsten Frings. "Maybe in the beginning we thought it would be easier. We didn’t really go into the challenges in midfield because not everybody worked with each other."
Thomas Schaaf said it was "not decisive" what he told his team at half-time but "that the team showed a reaction after the break. We finally challenged the opponents and got out of our passiveness," said the coach, who also praised the team’s morale. "The fact that the guys did not give up but kept giving their all underlines the big quality in our team," added Schaaf.
