"It may not have been an optimal result for us but the group is very balanced and all teams still have the same chance of reaching the next round," said Werder’s new Brazilian Wesley about the Champions League group following Bremen’s 2-2 draw at home against Tottenham Hotspur. The other two teams in the group – Twente Enschede and Inter Milan – also played to a 2-2 draw, leaving all four sides even with one point on the table. "That makes us all in first place," joked manager Klaus Allofs about the results of the group. "That only confirms what we said before hand – that it is a very tight group."

Even though the Green-Whites missed out for a sixth time to start a Champions League campaign with a victory, the players were in good spirits that their goal of reaching the Round of 16 should been achieved. "It’s unfortunate that we did not start the group stage with three points but we still have a few games to play and are able to win away as well," said Clemens Fritz. Manager Klaus Allofs sees the team’s current position as good. "There are still five games to be played and in the next games we expect to have some injured players back," said Allofs.

For head coach Thomas Schaaf the group being so balanced is not a surprise. "This is a group with strong teams which is not easy to overcome. All of the opponents have high quality and you saw that again today. With these opponents you cannot say this is an easy or a difficult match," said the 49-year-old coach. "Today was a poor match for us and I hope it is the exception," said keeper Tim Wiese, who knows the team needs an improvement over the coming games to reach the knockout stage. "To have a better starting position it would have been necessary to win today. But the draw is also good," said Aaron Hunt. "Now we have to make sure that we take something with us from Milan."

Werder proved that is not impossible as recent as 1 October 2008 when the Green-Whites played to a 1-1 draw at Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. "Winning at Inter Milan is certainly difficult, but also not impossible," said Petri Pasanen, who started the last match in Milan. "Inter may be the favourite in the match but you saw in the game against Twente that everything is possible," added goal scorer Marko Marin.
