Werder Bremen started their 2010-11 Champions League season with a 2-2 draw at home against Tottenham Hotspur. Hugo Almeida and Marko Marin scored for Werder after the Green-Whites fell behind 2-0 on goals by Petri Pasanen (own goal) and Peter Crouch.

Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf once again had to do without injured Claudio Pizarro, Per Mertesacker and Naldo, playing with nearly the same team that held Bayern Munich to a 0-0 draw in the Bundesliga last weekend. The only change was Aaron Hunt heading to the bench in favour of Hugo Almeida as the second striker alongside Marko Arnautovic.

The match could not have started worse for Werder as Petri Pasanen deflected a cross past his keeper Tim Wiese into his own goal for a 1-0 Tottenham lead after 12 minutes. Tottenham took advantage of the shocked Green-Whites and doubled the lead in front of 30,344 spectators at Weser Stadium in the 18th minute. Rafael van der Vaart struck a cross from the left side into the area where Crouch leapt over Pasanen to head past Wiese for a 2-0 advantage.

Thomas Schaaf’s team worked hard to get back into the game and had a number of strong actions through Marko Marin. But the guests had the next chance though Wiese made a superb save on Gareth Bale’s shot in the 31st. Werder pulled a goal back in the 43rd minute to make it 2-1 with Wesley’s cross finding Hugo Almeida, who headed past the Tottenham keeper for a 2-1 deficit at the break.

Werder came storming out of the changing room with Marin snatching a loose ball in the 47th minute and then blasting home from 22 yards out to knot it at 2-2. Schaaf’s team wanted more but Almeida shot over the cross bar in the 55th minute and Aaron Hunt’s attempt went wide in the 73rd. Bremen were clearly the better team in the second half and pushed forward looking for the victory. In the end, it remained at 2-2 in Werder’s opener in Group A against Tottenham Hotspur.
