The Green-Whites are finally back in the Champions League. This Tuesday night, Werder welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Weser Stadium for their first game in Group A. Did you know …

…that Werder are participating in the Champions League for the sixth time in the last seven seasons? Before missing last year, the Green-Whites had qualified for the Champions League for the past five seasons. Tottenham Hotspur's last appearance dates back a few more years as they last played in 1961-62 in the European Cup of Champions.

…that Werder's last Champions League home match was 9 December 2008 in a 2-1 (0-0) victory over Inter Milan, who are also their group opponents this season? There were nine players on the pitch who are currently on Werder's roster, including Claudio Pizarro, whose goal made it 1-0.

…that Bremen has only played against two English opponents in European competitions - both times under head coach Thomas Schaaf? Just like Tottenham Hotspur, both opponents came from London. In 1999-2000 Werder took on Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup and the Green-Whites faced Chelsea in the group stage of the 2006-07 Champions League.

…that Tottenham last played on German soil in the group stage of the 2006-07 UEFA Cup, winning 1-0 on a goal by Dimitar Berbatov against his former club Bayer Leverkusen?

…that Werder players Mikael Silvestre and Claudio Pizarro are the most experienced and top scoring players, respectively, among either team? Werder's new Frenchman Silvestre has 79 Champions League appearances compared to the 69 games for Tottenham's top man William Gallas. And Claudio Pizarro has tallied 16 goals in the competition while the guests' top scorer is Peter Crouch with nine goals.
