It ended in a draw but there was one winner – and that was Werder Bremen. The Green-Whites played a superb match against the double winners Bayern Munich and boarded the plane back to Bremen with plenty of pride despite a 0-0 draw.

Defender Sebastian Prödl summarised Bremen’s confidence, saying: "We can all look forward to the future. We have a couple of new faces who really did super today. We are missing some game practice but that will come." His Austrian compatriot Marko Arnautovic built upon that comment, adding: "It was clear that Werder are a top team in Germany. And we showed that again today. But the best thing is that we ourselves have the feeling that we are getting better week-by-week. We just have to continue that. Then we will have a very strong season."

Head coach Thomas Schaaf did not feel it necessary to calm his players’ euphoric evaluation of the goalless draw. "It’s true, we really played well today. Altogether it was a very interesting match after which we can be happy with the point. It was clear today that we have a good squad who goes into things with a lot of confidence," said the coach.

It was no surprise that Wesley was also happy after the game. "A jump into a big league is never easy for a South American. That’s why I’m very happy that I really got the nervous butterflies under control quickly. It went very well for me, even though I know I still have a lot to learn. The difference between Brazil and the Bundesliga is very big," said the 23-year-old Wesley. "The speed is totally different. The spaces are a lot tighter. The coverage in midfield is so disciplined and consequent that every lost ball can be turned into a counter attack. But I like that a lot. I am certain that it fits my style."

Werder’s new Brazilian is not the only reason that manager Klaus Allofs is looking positively towards the future. "The team did very well today. Still I hope that we get our three injured players back quickly. Because that improves the quality even more and we have even more competition within the team," said Allofs.
