Werder Bremen passed their difficult away test against Bayern Munich with a strong showing in gaining a point in a 0-0 draw which leaves them 10th on the Bundesliga table after three game days.
In front of 69,000 spectators in the sold-out Allianz Arena, Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf was without the injured trio of Per Mertesacker, Naldo and Claudio Pizarro, replacing them in the defence with Sebastian Prödl and Mikael Silvestre while Brazilian Wesley started up front. And Werder had the first chance of the game after five minutes with Prödl’s header hitting the post and then deflecting off Bayern keeper Jörg Butt’s foot off the crossbar. How unlucky. After that Bayern gained more control of the game but the Werder backline stood well. At the other end, Marko Marin forced Butt into a fine save after just more than half an hour. But the game went into the break even at 0-0.
Bayern Munich increased the pressure after the break and pushed forward with all their might looking for the lead. In the 65th minute, however, Marko Arnautovic missed an opportunity to put Werder ahead after a fine individual effort but could not beat Bayern’s keeper. The game got better and better with both teams creating one chance after another – still no goal would fall. Butt again proved too good for Bremen with five minutes left, fending away the substitute Hugo Almeida’s shot. In the end, it was an even and fair 0-0 draw and an important away point for Thomas Schaaf’s injury-weakened side.
