There was tension, uncertainty and so much happened at one time and that in nearly the final minute before the closing of the summer transfer period at the end of August. "There was a lot of restlessness and plenty of speculation," said Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf about the hectic times. But now – heading into the third game day – the Bundesliga begins all over again in a certain manner with teams finally having completed their rosters. "Now you know what every team has available, the facts are clear. It can start now," said Schaaf of the symbolic start of the season. And an absolute highlight awaits on Saturday, 11 September 2010 at 6:30 p.m. with the North-South classic showdown between Bayern Munich and Werder.
Per Mertesacker is just one of three important players who are out for Werder in Munich along with Claudio Pizarro and Naldo. Replacing them is not exactly easy but anything other than impossible. "We have some choices and will think it over and have some possibilities," said Schaaf confidently. "We always have the trait that no matter how many players we were missing we played excellently. I hope we are confident enough in Munich to prove our ability. We have seen the potential this team has. Regarding the implementation of our game plan, we can improve and we are ready to do so." And a former Werder player knows that all too well. "I know coach Thomas Schaaf, he always has some magic under his hat," said Bayern striker Miroslav Klose.
Things are slowly getting serious as Werder Bremen left Friday afternoon heading towards Munich where the Green-Whites will face off against Bayern Munich Saturday evening. For the first time, both of Werder's new acquisitions Wesley and Mikael Silvestre are on the Bremen game squad. The Frenchman Silvestre is really excited about his first challenge with his new club. "All the games are important, but the matches against Bayern of course are a little bit more special," said the experienced defender. "I am certainly happy finally to be on hand!"
Werder are travelling to Munich with the following squad: Wiese, Mielitz, Boenisch, Pasanen, Fritz, Silvestre, Prödl, Bargfrede, Borowski, Hunt, Husejinovic, Marin, Frings, Jensen, Wesley, Arnautovic, Wagner, Almeida
