Werder Bremen defensive ace Per Mertesacker suffered a broken eye socket and orbital bone in Germany’s 6-1 (3-0) victory Tuesday night over Azerbaijan in the Euro 2012 qualifier in Cologne. Those were the results of an extra examination on Wednesday in Bremen. "I immediately had a feeling that it was not going to be good," said Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf about the challenge between Mertesacker and Vagif Javadov in which the Werder player was injured.
"Of course it’s a very unsatisfying situation for us. In addition to Naldo, now we have a second defensive stalwart out who really dominated in the interior defense in the past," said Schaaf about the loss of the 71-time capped German international. "He will definitely be out on Saturday in Munich and Tuesday against Tottenham Hotspur," said Schaaf. The coach also said Mertesacker is very disheartened about the injury. "He is very disappointed because he wanted to remain in rhythm. That is gone now," said Schaaf.
