The second game day of the international calendar is over for Werder’s eight players on national team duty Tuesday. But it was not a very good day for Werder’s professionals. While Germans Per Mertesacker, Marko Marin and Tim Wiese beat Azerbaijan 6-1 (3-0) in Cologne, the only other Werder player who could celebrate a victory was Sebastian Prödl.
Hugo Almeida played the entire game for Portugal but could not stop the team from losing in Group H qualification 1-0 in Norway. Petri Pasanen was Finland’s captain but they lost 2-1 against the Netherlands in Rotterdam. And Sebastian Boenisch and Poland, who are already qualified to the Euro 2012 as co-hosts, lost in a friendly against World Cup 2010 side Australia 2-1 in Krakow.
Things were a bit better for Sebastian Prödl as the Austrian helped his team beat Kazakhstan 2-0 (0-0). The Austrian U21 team and Werder striker Marko Arnautovic meanwhile lost 2-1 in Scotland to miss the Playoffs for qualification to the 2011 European Championship in Denmark. Arnautovic brought former Werder star Andreas Herzog’s team ahead 1-0 in the 10th minute only to lose on goals by Bannan (29’) and Maguire (89’).
