Werder Bremen defender Mertesacker suffered a broken eye socket and a gash under his left eye in the German national team’s 6-1 (3-0) victory over Azerbaijan in the Euro 2012 qualifier in Cologne. That was the result of an x-ray of the 71-capped international, who was subbed out after 11 minutes following an elbow he took from an opponent. He was taken to a Cologne hospital Tuesday night.

Doctors said Mertesacker does not need an operation. As planned, the defender drove back to Bremen Tuesday overnight. He will undergo further examinations on Wednesday.
