The German national team with Werder Bremen player Per Mertesacker easily knocked off Azerbaijan 6-1 in their second Euro 2012 qualifier in Group A in Cologne. Heiko Westermann (28’), Lukas Podolski (45’), Miroslav Klose (45’+2/90’), Rashad Ferhad Sadygov (53’, own goal) and Holger Badstuber (85) scored the goals for Germany.
Werder fans were not only in celebrations afterwards as there are some concerns about Per Mertesacker, who took an elbow from an opponent and had to be subbed out in the 11th minute with a cut underneath his eye. "He suffered a cut, which was stitched up. We hope that nothing is broken. But to be certain, we went to the hospital immediately with Per," said German national team assistant coach Hansi Flick at half-time of the game. And national team coach Jogi Löw added: "Per had a cut under his left eye. We had to sub him out right away because the eye was swollen closed and he lost a contact lens. He couldn’t see any more. I don’t know if he can play on Saturday."
