Werder Bremen keeper Tim Wiese will remain the number two keeper for the German national team even after the return of Bayer Leverkusen's Rene Adler. German national team coach Joachim Löw confirmed that at a press conference on Wednesday during which he named Schalke's Manuel Neuer as the No. 1 keeper just as at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Wiese and Adler will be the top two competitors for Neuer's job. Adler had been considered the number one keeper before the World Cup, which he missed due to a rib injury. Löw also said that both Wiese and Adler would get appearances in the build-up to the Euro 2012. Germany are "very well set" with their three goalkeepers, Löw said.
The press conference also featured Löw confirming that Michael Ballack will be the captain of the German national team. Philipp Lahm, who acted as captain during the World Cup, returns to a deputy captain role.
The German national team will play two 2012 European Championship qualifiers on Friday 3 September 2010 and Tuesday 7 September 2010. The Germans with Bremen players Tim Wiese, Per Mertesacker and Marko Marin take on Belgium on Friday in Brussels and then face Azerbaijan four days later in Cologne.
