Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf gave his players a day off of training on Monday after a 4-2 victory over Cologne. When the coach calls his team back to Weser Stadium on Tuesday, it will be a seriously decimated roster. With international matches on the calendar a number of Green-Whites are under way with their national teams.
Marko Marin, Tim Wiese and Per Mertesacker are on the German roster for Euro 2012 qualifiers against Belgium on Friday, 3 September 2010 at 8:45 p.m. and Azerbaijan on Tuesday, 7 September 2010 in Cologne at 8:45 p.m. Sebastian Prödl and Marko Arnautovic are playing for Austria with defender Prödl lining up for the A-national team in Salzburg on 7 September 2010 against Kazakhstan while Arnautovic and the U21 Austrian team will take on Scotland in European Championship qualification also on Tuesday, 7 September 2010 in Aberdeen.
Petri Pasanen and Hugo Almeida also play this weekend in Euro 2012 qualifiers. Pasanen and Finland head to Chisinau to play Moldova (3 September 2010) and Rotterdam to face the Netherlands (7 September 2010). Almeida's Portuguese have a home match against Cyprus on 3 September 2010 in Guimaraes before heading north to take on Norway on 7 September 2010 in Oslo.
Sebastian Boenisch is close to making his debut for the Polish national team as head coach Franciszek Smuda nominated him for the test matches against fellow Euro 2012 co-hosts Ukraine (4 September 2010) and Australia (7 September 2010). As one of the co-hosts, Poland must not play qualification matches.
Claudio Pizarro meanwhile will stay behind in Bremen and wait for his comeback to the Peru national team. The initial diagnosis after the game against Cologne was confirmed as Pizarro suffered a torn left thigh muscle fibre and will not travel for the friendly against Canada (4 September 2010).
