4-0, 3-1, 1-4, 2-3 and 4-2. Werder Bremen's first games of the season show that boredom stands no chance with the Green-Whites. In stoppage alone against Cologne as everything was already decided Werder turned a 3-1 lead into a 4-2 victory.
The satisfaction about the first Bundesliga victory of the season was aplenty. "This victory was very important. We always want to offer up something special and we showed that again," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. But the coach was a bit agitated about the two goals allowed. "Altogether we made things more difficult than they had to be. If we had played a bit more calmly we could have secured the win more easily. The goals allowed did aggravate me. After going ahead 2-0 it was not necessary to give back a goal right away. And even though I believe there was a foul in our favour before their goal in stoppage time, we cannot allow that goal," said Schaaf.
Marko Marin, who along with Marko Arnautovic was one of the best players on the pitch, was less worried about the goals allowed. "You could see that we played better than in the past two games," said the German international, who was fouled on the play which led to the penalty and first goal for Bremen. "That was absolutely the correct decision by the referee. I went by my defender at full steam and he held me up top and struck me from below."
Manager Klaus Allofs was also pleased with the team's showing. "Everyone has to see that success only comes when you play together. The goal scorers stood in the spotlight but did you see the super move by Clemens Fritz which led to the 4-1 lead? Or the assist by Claudio Pizarro?"
And the fact that the Peruvian Pizarro will miss some time with an expected torn muscle fibre is a reason that Bremen are looking forward to a Bundesliga break. "Even though we have a lot of players on international duty, the break will do us good. Claudio is injured and other players have some minor injuries as well which need to heal. You have to admit that it's a very strenuous rhythm when you play the Champions League qualification matches," said Allofs, who is also looking forward to the re-start against Bayern. "After the first couple of weeks you can see that the season has started. We are still in all three competitions. And we can look forward to what's still to come."
