Marko Arnautovic was very criticised this off-season with over-exaggerated stories filling the summer news hole. But Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf prophesized the following: "You need to get to know Marko and Bremen will get to know him. We will make it that everyone will love him." But not even the coach could have expected that Arnautovic would take such a big step into the Bremen fans’ hearts in Werder’s Bundesliga home debut. The Austrian started for the first time, scoring two goals and assisting a third score and being named TARGOBANK Man of the Match. And fans were cheering his name from the ranks minutes after the game.
Arnautovic also received praise from Schaaf. "His skills were never in question for us. He had a very good game today, even though everything was not 100 percent. He was exciting in many of his actions. That what he hinted at in Genua he showed very clearly today," said Schaaf. And Arnautovic was pleased with his own showing. "It was a good game for me but also for the entire team. You cannot really have a better start to the Bundesliga. But it’s clear that I still have room to improve and I will do my best to do that," said the Austrian, who has already been in the headlines during the
preparations. "It wasn’t always nice but you have to live with that a couple days and just keep moving on. There are people who answer questions in the media. But I am not like that. I want to show it on the pitch. The coach and the team have helped me with that," added Arnautovic.
The Austrian international returns to his national team after his first Bundesliga start as he will travel to the Austrian U21 team for their European Championship qualifier against Scotland on 7 September 2010. Werder’s new acquisition also hopes to show his skills there as Austria are currently atop Group 10 in the qualification.
