Werder Bremen won their first Bundesliga game of the season in their 2010-11 home opener by knocking off Cologne 4-2. Marko Arnautovic scored two goals for Thomas Schaaf’s team while Torsten Frings and Hugo Almeida also tallied for the Green-Whites. Lukas Podolski and Kevin McKenna scored for Cologne.

Thomas Schaaf made two changes from his Champions League qualifier against Sampdoria Genua with Sebastian Boenisch and Marko Arnautovic replacing Petri Pasanen and Sandro Wagner. Arnautovic had a great chance after just three minutes but shot wide left. Bremen grabbed the lead in the 33rd minute on a penalty by Torsten Frings, who connected on his 18th consecutive spot kick following Petit’s foul on Marko Marin. Arnautovic scored his first goal in the Bundesliga just three minutes later, heading home a pass by Claudio Pizarro for a 2-0 lead in the 36th minute. Cologne cut the deficit to 2-1 a minute later on Podolski’s goal off the right post. Pizarro had to be subbed out after 40 minutes for Hugo Almeida with a thigh injury. And Werder led 2-1 at the break.

Schaaf did not make any changes at half time and Bremen continued to play attacking football. The lead was two goals again in the 74th minute with Arnautovic’s cross from the right side finding Almeida, who pushed home from two yards out as Bremen led 3-1. Torsten Frings saved a ball at the goal line in the 87th minute and Arnautovic struck again a minute into stoppage time as Frings fed the Austrian who hit home from 15 yards for a 4-1 lead. McKenna finished off the scoring three minutes into stoppage time but the game was already decided and the Green-Whites had collected their first Bundesliga victory of the season.
