On Saturday, 28.08.2010 at 3:30pm, at the 'Weser-Stadion', Werder Bremen will play host to 1. FC Köln, who lost 1-3 to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in their season opener and will also travel to Bremen without two important defenders, Geromel (injured) and Yousseff Mohamad (suspended).
Ahead of the clash with FC, Werder coach Thomas Schaaf explained: "They have a good team and they are very definitely capable of playing football." FC are the kind of opponent that can prove very difficult to play against, as we experienced during the last two intensive and testing games against them last season (0-0 in Cologne, 1-0 in Bremen thanks to a penalty converted by Torsten Frings in added time). "We’ll have to live with the fact that Köln will give us no room to play in and will themselves attempt to get the ball forward quickly and hit us on the break."
But for all of the attention he may be paying to his opponent, the bulk of Thomas Schaaf’s focus is set on his own team: "It’s important for us to perform at our best. Then we will surely play well against Köln," remarked the 49 year old confidently. Following the success in Genoa, it is now essential for Werder to achieve a stable level of performance: "Our exciting games are only enjoyable as long as we are successful. We are hoping that what we saw at the end of the game in Genoa, has made us stronger and instilled the self-confidence we need to put on a top performance against Köln right from the outset," explained Schaaf at the press conference ahead of the game against 1. FC Köln.
