A great honour for the chairman of Werder’s supervisory board Willi Lemke! In his function as a 'UN Special Adviser for Sport in the service of Development and Peace', the 64 year old received the UEFA Monaco Charity Award for the work of his UN office, in front of an audience of millions, on Thursday evening. The prize is endowed with 1 million Euro and is bestowed upon organisations which, in special measures, make use of the opportunities presented by sport to aide positive development and support it.

"It’s a real delight! It’s a great acknowledgement of the work done by the United Nations over the past two years. We can use this money to advance further projects," said a very happy Lemke, who received the award from UEFA president Michel Platini prior to the draw for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

Willi Lemke has been operating as a 'UN Special Adviser for Sport in the service of Development and Peace' since March 2008. From his offices in Geneva, New York and Bremen, with the support of seven members of staff, Willi Lemke has been coordinating work on a social basis and determinedly pushing for new impulses on behalf of UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon.

Having received the award, Willi Lemke then sat back to follow proceedings in the second major point of the programme from a Werder view point. Together with Werder’s general managers Klaus Allofs and Klaus Filbry, as well as honorary captain and assistant to the board of directors Frank Baumann, the club representatives watched the draw for the group stage of the Champions League. "The game against Sampdoria certainly wasn’t for those of a nervous disposition but we pulled it off! Having Werder’s name in the draw this evening makes the whole event all the more special," remarked a happy supervisory board chairman at the end of a very satisfying day.
