Sampdoria Genua are even themselves somewhat ponderous about the euphoria which is still overwhelming in Genua despite losing the first leg of the Champions League qualification 3-1 at Werder Bremen. Everyone here thinks the team will advance, everyone believes that Werder will slip up. And star striker Giampaolo Pazzini had an answer for the enormous inquiries by journalists into this limitless confidence. "The late goal in Bremen opened up quite a few things. We will be pushed by more than 30,000 fans. Quite a bit can happen," said the nine times capped Italian international.
The words from Pazzini’s mouth pleased head coach Domenico Di Carlo since they mirrored his own thoughts, which include a ban on thoughts of not advancing. "It’s true that we experienced Werder with strengths and weaknesses and if everybody goes to the limit of their performance then we can turn it around with our fans. The stadium will be sold out and with the fans in our backs we will look to attack early, run a lot and play quickly. That will be the recipe," said Di Carlo.
But the Sampdoria boss must watch out that his team does not overwind itself. "We cannot just throw ourselves forward without using our heads. Werder would punish us mercilessly. Everyone needs to keep his head and know that we have time over the entire game. We had time for two goals or the 3-1 which would push us to extra time," said Di Carlo.
