Werder Bremen’s newest acquisition Wesley arrived at Bremen airport at 9:05 p.m. Sunday evening. The Brazilian was picked up at the airport by management assistant Frank Baumann, interpreter Roland Martinez and a team from WERDER.TV, who accompanied Wesley during first steps as Werder player. After arrival, he was brought to Bremen’s Park Hotel where he will overnight until further accommodations are organized.
Even though he will not meet his teammates at the airport on Monday, the 23-year-old will not have a lot of peace and quiet in the coming days. Awaiting him are the usual stops for a Werder player at the start of the season: getting fitted for kit, photo shootings, picking an automobile from Volkswagen and of course the strenuous training program. Fitness coach Yann-Benjamin Kugel stayed in Bremen especially to look after Bremen’s injured players as well as Wesley. Head coach Thomas Schaaf did not want to focus too much on Wesley’s arrival. "Our full concentration is on the Genua game. Everything else will be taken care of on Wednesday. But I know that he is in good hands here in Bremen and that he will not spend three days in bed," said Schaaf. Wesley was due to go through the mandatory medical check-up with team doctor Dr. Götz Dimanski starting at 8 a.m. on Monday.
Wesley cannot wait to help his teammates, especially after the transfer negotiations were long drawn out. "Now I want to get into it and please the fans. Werder have already had some successful Brazilians like Diego and Naldo. And I want to give the fans the same joy. I am very motivated because I know that Werder wanted me very much so," said Wesley.
He will get the chance to watch his new teammates on Tuesday on television from Genua. "It’s the perfect opportunity to get to know the team a little better. Besides I am really excited to see if we will play in the Champions League," said Wesley, who already has been outfitted with the fitting scarf for a night of football – his first welcoming present.
