Thomas Schaaf and Klaus Allofs sat on the coaching bench long after the final whistle and let Werder Bremen’s loss against Hoffenheim sink in. Nobody could have expected such a performance after the impressive showings in the German Cup and the Champions League qualification. Werder had failed collectively over the past 90 minutes. "We played a pretty darn bad game today, not at all how we had imagined. We only looked good for three minutes. Things went bad quickly after that," said Schaaf shaking his head. "We led 1-0 and did not do anything else we had planned. Everything we did well on Wednesday against Sampdoria Genua was gone. We were not present, not confident and not ready to go the long way."
The coach did not want to spend too much time on the analysis but wanted to rather look ahead. "We know that we can change a lot very quickly in football. As negatively as we played today it’s possible and necessary to play positively on Tuesday. We have to change gears and correct our mistakes and play much more concentrated," said Schaaf.
Manager Klaus Allofs also did not shy away from talking about the Green-Whites’ poor showing. "I cannot explain the performance. We were lucky to take the lead early. You have to do more with that. But we forgot to play football and did not work much on defence like you have to. We were careless and that’s how a 4-1 loss can happen. And it’s difficult to come back in such conditions – it was very warm today. But we have to give respect to Hoffenheim. The opponents played very strong today," said Allofs.
Allofs refused to speak badly about the start of the season after just one game day. “I don’t know if this was our level today. We were good against Genua, and nothing worked today. It’s too early to say we are there or there. Now we will play against Genua on Tuesday and then on Saturday against Cologne. After then we will know more,” said Allofs.
