Werder Bremen on Saturday night were drawn a difficult matchup for the second round of the German Cup as the Green-Whites will get a re-match of last year’s final against holders Bayern Munich on either 26 or 27 October 2010 (the exact date is yet to be determined). The Werder players learned of the draw at Bremen airport shortly after their arrival.
Torsten Frings talked of a tough task. "Of course this is one of the toughest opponents we could have been drawn. But we want to continue our cup tradition in Munich and also beat Bayern," said the Bremen captain. Sebastian Prödl agreed with Frings and added: "This is a nice showdown. We are looking forward to it. We have to beat everybody to win the cup anyhow. Besides we owe them." And midfielder Tim Borowski added: "Games against FC Bayern are always thrilling duels. And it will be a very interesting game this time as well."
Manager Klaus Allofs meanwhile was a bit disappointed when he learned of the draw. “It’s too bad for German football that a rematch of the final from last season will already be played in the second round. But that is the German Cup. When we won the cup in 2009 we played all the difficult opponents away. Why should we not be able to do that again?” added Allofs.
