Werder Bremen on Wednesday night took an important step towards the Champions League with their home victory against Sampdoria Genua. Whoever passed through the "construction site Weser Stadium" just 48 hours after the final whistle could hardly imagine that a football match would be played there soon. The construction workers were working unbelievably hard and in long shifts and hope to have ready for the game various facilities such as the guests and referee changing rooms, the doping room and the media areas as well as the lower level of the East Curve and the new VIP area in the west grandstands. For this reason, the Werder Bremen management in person of Klaus Allofs, Klaus Filbry and Klaus-Dieter Fischer invited all workers and craftsmen to a grill party next week.
"With this gesture we want to thank all participants personally," said the chair of the board Allofs on Friday. During the busiest time, up to 380 workers were at the construction site trying to fulfil the requirements of the UEFA for the game against Genua. "This dedication around the clock was not just a matter of fact. That was the only way we could offer our fans another unforgettable Champions League night," added Allofs.
Allofs did not want to forget to emphasise that the game against Genua was only an important intermediary step on the way to the completion of the stadium renovation. "We are happy that we collectively mastered this hurdle. But we also know that there is a lot of work ahead in the coming weeks. The home changing room is the next important step for us. Also there we hope for the continued excellent work from all involved," said Allofs.
