Werder had an unchanged roster as they completed their final training Friday 20 August 2010 ahead of their first game of the new Bundesliga season in Hoffenheim. Naldo (knee problems) and Christian Vander (pubis bone inflammation) were the only two players unavailable for head coach Thomas Schaaf – though neither were fit for the German Cup match in Ahlen. And neither of them are expected to return soon.
The game against Hoffenheim could be a very special one for one of the Green-Whites. With a goal Claudio Pizarro would become the sole record holder as the top-scoring foreigner in Bundesliga history. At the moment he is even with Giovane Elber at 133 goals atop the rankings. "Of course it would be nice but more important is that we win," laughed the Peruvian.
Pizarro apparently will not be only scoring goals for Werder. The new head coach of the Peruvian national team Sergio Markarián nominated Pizarro for the test match against Canada on 4 September 2010. "Of course it’s nice to be back. I always wanted to play for my country," said the striker, who is already looking forward to the game. Pizarro last played for Peru in 2007 and has since been accused of lack of discipline along with other players and was no longer nominated for Peruvian matches. "There was quite a bit hung on him but for him it was only important to make sure that the accusations could not be proven," said head coach Thomas Schaaf about Pizarro’s nomination. "Of course I am happy for him because he enjoys playing for his country and can show his skills there," added the coach.
Werder departed for their game in Hoffenheim with following squad:
Wiese, Mielitz, Boenisch, Pasanen, Fritz, Mertesacker, Prödl, Bargfrede, Borowski, Hunt, Marin, Frings, Jensen, Arnautovic, Rosenberg, Wagner, Almeida, Pizarro
