There could not have been a better premiere for the new, still improvised East Curve. Bremen scored three fine goals in a great game for three emotional goal celebrations not far from the hot-blooded Green-White fans. In the game against Sampdoria Genua, you could get a first impression about what the future will be like in the new Weser Stadium.

"This is an entirely different atmosphere. Now we are missing the acoustics of the open roof, but we are really excited about the completion of Weser Stadium," said defender Sebastian Prödl. And his backline mate Per Mertesacker agreed. "The perspective in the stadium has totally changed. Before things were further away, now things are a lot closer. For the goal celebrations that was of course a really nice new experience being so close to the fans. We want to repeat that as often as possible," said Mertesacker.

But the new East Curve was not the only spot that made their premiere against Sampdoria Genua. The west grandstands were also completely used for the first time, including the new VIP area. And the final rehearsal before the first Bundesliga home match was considered a success.

The sporting premiere without Mesut Özil however was not even an issue for Werder even though the Green-Whites had to answer a flood of questions about it after the game. Most of the answers were similar to manager Klaus Allofs’ message. "We always said that we lost a strong player in him but believe me, Mesut was not that dominating of a player with Werder that we have to worry a lot about it after his departure. I am certain that every player today had other things on their minds. It was clear that others have the chance to move more into the focus of things and I am happy that it worked for players like Hunt and Bargfrede," said Allofs. Captain Torsten Frings added: "The concentration on the game was most important for all of us for days. I think the only who didn’t think that way was Mesut."

Head coach Thomas Schaaf was also only interested in looking forward. "I think that we have said enough about Mesut Özil in the last couple days and we should be concentrating on our tasks. We have known for longer than today that Aaron Hunt can also do such things in the midfield. I was very happy that he was able to do that today so well," said Schaaf. And the fans at Weser Stadium saw it the same way and stood for a round of applause at Hunt’s substitution out of the game.

Claudio Pizarro believes Hunt could improve his performance even more. "Aaron is a classy player who was not so used to playing the position so long. That’s why I am certain that he will be even better with more game practice," said Pizarro.
