The parallels are incredible! In April 2009 Werder played spectacularly against an Italian team - then Udinese Calcio - with Weser Stadium going mad. The goal for 2-0 was scored in the 67th minute with the third coming just two minutes later. But the party atmosphere in front of a French referee was dampened a bit just minutes before the final whistle. On Wednesday night against Sampdoria Genua is was even a bit more bitter. Sampdoria's 3-1 goal was scored in the 90th minute and despite a man advantage for Werder. That left the sweet Green-White football cocktail with a slight aftertaste.
"You could see that coming in the minutes beforehand. We did not really control the Italians' actions. You can certainly say it was a very intensive game and that we were tired. But we had a man advantage and should have therefore pushed things even more," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. "With the goal allowed we turned a tremendous result into a good one. But maybe this goal will keep us alert. Because I don't know if we could finish things off with a 3-0 result," said the coach. "The way we played here was very good. We moved very well and showed passion. In the second half we were rewarded for our motivation, creating chances and scoring very nice goals."
But there was a mixture of satisifaction and frustration among the Werder bosses. "The goal allowed means a huge difference. Without it, Genua would have needed four goals to advance. Now they only need two. It really aggravates Thomas Schaaf and me very much that we received such a goal with a man advantage," said manager Klaus Allofs. Still the manager was optimistic. "We know that we are very strong on the road and also can score and even win the game. Therefore maybe the goal will not mean all that much."
