An hour after the announcement of Mesut Özil’s transfer to Real Madrid, manager Klaus Allofs answered journalists’ questions. WERDER.TV broadcasted the conference live and WERDER.DE recorded the most important statements.

Mr. Allofs, the negotiations with Real Madrid about a transfer of Mesut Özil was the number one topic in the Bundesliga. What happened that things went so quick in the end?

Two things came together. We did not really move forward in our efforts to extend our contract with Mesut and then in the negotiations things neared our expectations. The solution came today with more money being offered. We also tried to be constructive. In the end, Real had to make a big step up in comparison to their original offer.

Could you describe in more detail why the extension with Özil did not work out?

Sports wise we were of the same opinion. We agreed that one or two years with Werder would be helpful for Mesut. Economically we were not able to agree. Before the World Cup we were close. We had constructive talks which did not however result in the necessary clarity.

How difficult will the sporting loss be for the team?

You don’t really like losing a player like Özil, with his class, his development and his potential. He was a very important player for us. You can compare the situation with the departure of Diego.

Speaking of that, can you imagine a return of Diego?

Some fans of course would like that. But that is purely theoretical. Diego was happy in Bremen and then left us because he could earn much more money in Turin. That is still the case today. Besides, Turin would demand a transfer fee. Such an action for us is impossible economically.

Can Werder now quicken the transfer of Wesley?

The Özil transfer has nothing to do with that. The talks are fully independent of that. Should FC Santos hope now that Werder will offer more then that would be a mistake in judgement. We have our clear expectations how much Wesley can cost. We are relatively far and I reiterate that it could go very quickly if Santos keep their end of the discussions.

But what do the sporting plans look like after the transfer of Mesut Özil?

I compare it to the situation after the Diego transfer. Also then we did not acquire a direct successor. Instead the solution was already there. We have the same case now. We have a lot of trust in our players. I look at a player like Aaron Hunt and a Marko Marin who have already shown in the preparations that it can work very well. We don’t see any necessity of a quick reinforcement. But that doesn’t mean that we are not looking out for good investments in the team for the future.
