Midfielder Mesut Özil is leaving Werder Bremen and is set to sign a contract with Real Madrid. Both clubs agreed on the terms of the deal, which are to remain undisclosed, on Tuesday afternoon: "We respect Mesut’s wish to take the next step in his career right now," said the chairman of the Werder board, Klaus Allofs.
Mesut Özil will not participate in the afternoon training session with the rest of the Werder team on Tuesday and will instead travel to Madrid, where he will undergo a medical examination on Wednesday. The move means that the German international will no longer be available for selection for the Champions League qualifier against Sampdoria Genoa on Wednesday evening.
In the summer of 2009, Özil was part of the young German side which won the 'Under 21 European Championship'. His continuing development as a player on the Weser was rewarded with his first nomination for the German 'A' national team in the spring of 2009. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Özil was a member of the German side which finished in third place and he was one of ten candidates nominated for the 'Player of the Tournament' award.
