Two days before Werder’s Champions League qualification playoff first leg against Sampdoria Genua, there is plenty of excitement in Bremen camp. Despite poor weather a number of fans came out to the Weser Stadium grounds for Monday’s training. Among them were the first Italian fans who are spontaneously using the away match for a short holiday in the Hanseatic city.
Some 50 hours before kickoff, head coach Thomas Schaaf had nearly his entire squad. The only two players who could not train with the team were the injured Naldo (knee problems) and Christian Vander (pubis bone inflammation). Werder’s Brazilian defender Naldo has already ruled out an appearance in the return leg on Tuesday 24 August 2010. "At the moment I can run, but I don’t think I can return to the pitch before September," said the disappointed Naldo, who would gladly help his team in the important games against the Italians.
And German international Per Mertesacker knows that Genua will be a tough test for the Green-Whites. "It will be a very hard task. You shouldn’t be surprised if the showdown is even. Genua is a very strong Italian team with two dangerous strikers. But we accept the challenge and want to lay the foundation of advancing on Wednesday," said Mertesacker.
