In the end it was clear that there was a difference in class as 2010 German Cup finalists Werder Bremen eased past Rot Weiss Ahlen 4-0, even though it took some time before the Green-Whites pulled away in the first round of the German Cup. "You could see that it was the first competitive match after a long break. We had our struggles in the first 25 minutes. But we got better and better during the game and improved and are headed in the right direction," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. "Ahlen were very courageous and had some chances but thank god we overcame them. And in the end it was what we expected it to be."
Bremen now must continue their development as they face Italian side Sampdoria Genua in the Champions League qualification. "We have to find our form quickly and get into gear. That makes this game that much more important," said Schaaf. Manager Klaus Allofs also saw positives looking ahead to the Champions League qualifier. "We took a big step forward with this game. Every player moved a step forward. It was an important appearance by Marko Marin, for Sebastian Prödl, for Per Mertesacker, just for everyone. And on Wednesday we will face off against a different opponent. But if we can stay alert and use our chances we could have a good match," said Allofs.
Tim Borowski also was looking forward to Wednesday evening. "It was in the end a good test for the game against Sampdoria Genua. Ahlen held their own against us in the first half. We had to have some patience and keep calm," said the goal scorer.
