Werder Bremen advanced comfortably to the second round of the German Cup by beating third division side Rot Weiss Ahlen 4-0 in the first round. The goals for head coach Thomas Schaaf’s team were scored by Claudio Pizarro, Hugo Almeida, Tim Borowski and Marko Marin. In his starting line-up Schaaf replaced suspended captain Torsten Frings with Tim Borowski in Ahlen’s Werse Stadium while Sebastian Prödl took the place of injured centre back Naldo and Hugo Almeida served as a second striker alongside Claudio Pizarro.
Werder were slow getting into the game in the early stages against a motivated host side which proved more difficult than expected. Schaaf’s team however more and more took over the upper hand. In the 28th minute, Claudio Pizarro gave Werder the lead after burying Mesut Özil’s fine pass into the right corner. The Peruvian striker narrowly missed a second goal in the 32nd minute and Hugo Almeida was just off target 120 seconds later, leaving Werder ahead only 1-0 at the break.
Almeida missed another chance in the 52nd minute despite being one-on-one with the Ahlen keeper. And Werder keeper Tim Wiese made a superb save on Christian Knappmann’s shot seven minutes later. The Green-Whites took over after that point with Almeida scoring in the 64th minute. And the game was decided in the 68th minute with Tim Borowski’s fine volley shot into the left corner. Marko Marin finished off the scoring in the 82nd, running onto a nice pass from Sebastian Boenisch and looping it over Ahlen’s keeper for the 4-0 score-line.
