The season is ready to start for Werder Bremen. After six weeks of hard preparations, three training camps and numerous running, game and tactical sessions, head coach Thomas Schaaf’s men are about to start the season on Saturday 14 August 2010 at 3:30 p.m. with their first competitive match. In the first round of the German Cup, the Green-Whites will be facing Rot Weiss Ahlen, who were relegated from the second division last season and have former Werder striker Arie van Lent as coach on the sidelines.
Werder Bremen and especially head coach Thomas Schaaf are focused on their German Cup first round match-up against the third division side. And the focus is more on their own game than that of their opponents. "It’s only natural that we want to reach the next round in Ahlen. We expect that from the team because we know what wonderful moments the cup has given us," said the Bremen coach ahead of the match. And it may have slipped the minds of Werder fans and management that Bremen faced off against Ahlen nearly eight years ago. Back then, Ivan Klasnic scored just seconds before the final whistle to give Werder a 2-1 victory and a spot in the quarter-finals. Ahlen coach van Lent sees his team as a major underdog. "We don’t have anything to lose and have the advantage that Werder have not started their season yet. They have to lose again in the cup some time. And I hope it will happen on Saturday in Ahlen," said van Lent.
