Werders game in Dortmund mirrored the whole season for the Green-Whites. Werder as the more determined, controlling side who created the vast majority of the chances - as so often this season - left the field of play frustratingly empty handed for their journey back to the Weser. Tomas Rosicky scored the only goal of the tie (32') to flatter Dortmund with an undeserved win.

Werder began well, putting the homeside under immediate pressure with fast combination football. A long ball towards Ivan Klasnic almost gave Bremen the lead in the 8th minute. Markus Brzenska underestimated the long pass which fell to Klasnics feet but the Croatians attempted chip failed to fox keeper Roman Weidenfeller. The Werder striker was in again shortly afterwards when Christian Worns failed to reach a Ludovic Magnin cross but once again Weidenfeller denied the Bremen frontman.

Werder all the chances - Borussia get the goal

Ten minutes later the Dortmund keeper was in the thick of things again. The Dortmund defence managed to clear a Miro Klose header but only as far as Petri Pasanen who drove a shot from six meters which the Dortmund keeper flung himself to his left post to turn away (24'). Two minutes later Daniel Jensen tried his luck but couldn't keep his shot on target.

Borussia had more luck. Dortmund took the lead with their first chance. Jan Koller knocked on a long Christoph Metzelder throw to Tomas Rosicky who turned and lashed into the the bottom corner (32'). The home side almost extended their lead minutes later only to have Dedes free-kick fall into the safe hands of Andi Reinke.

The Green-Whites shook off the shock and camped out in front of the BVB goal before the half time break. Daniel Jensen tried to feed Johan Micoud in the box but the Frenchman couldn't reach the cross. In all the chaos, Dede collided with Ivan Klasnic in the midfield which led to the Croatian being forced out of the tie with a sprain and deep cut to his shin (45').

Valdez down in the box - ref swallows his pea

The visitors continued to control the proceedings at the Westfalen stadium. Firstly Daniel Jensen tried his luck again from 22 meters, then Miroslav Klose

broke through in the box and laid the ball back to Micoud who blasted the ball over the bar (50'). Dortmund remained dangerous on the break and from dead ball situations. Ewerton tested Reinke on two occasions (55' and 66') and Jan Koller was denied brilliantly by the werder keeper (64'). The Hansiatic side were still heavily the better side but still attempts from Valdez (57'), Ernst (62') and Borowski (63') all failed to draw the sides level.

Hectic broke out again in the closing phases. Firstly referee Lutz Michael disallowed a BVB goal (86') and shortly afterwards when Nelson Valdez went down in the box under the challenge of Sebastian Kehl, the referee waved, to general astonishment, play on. Substitute Zidan had the last chance of the game but his deflected shot cleared the cross bar and left the scoreline at 1:0 for Dortmund.
