The 2010-11 season finally starts for Werder Bremen on Saturday 14 August 2010 when they play at Rot Weiss Ahlen in the first round of the German Cup. Head coach Thomas Schaaf will have available his entire roster save for Brazilian centre back Naldo and backup keeper Christian Vander.

There is a burden for the team coming into the current season as captain Torsten Frings is suspended for the first round of this year's cup after being shown yellow-red in the 2010 final against Bayern Munich. Also not in Ahlen will be Felix Kroos, who despite impressive showings will start the season with the U23s in a test match Friday evening against RB Leipzig.

Coach Schaaf feels hardly easy-minded about being heavy favourites against Rot Weiss Ahlen, a third division side which was relegated last season. "We are not fixated on the opponents but on what we want to achieve," said the coach. And that is certainly reaching the second round of the German Cup.

Werder were leaving Friday afternoon with the following squad:

Wiese, Mielitz, Boenisch, Pasanen, Fritz, Mertesacker, Prödl, Bargfrede, Borowski, Hunt, Özil, Marin, Jensen, Arnautovic, Rosenberg, Wagner, Almeida, Pizarro
